Some Get Away

Those Stitched Memos of mine that began as an Artclash / Fun-a-Day series and winter-making-project will be on view at Twelve Chairs in Boston's South End through the summer.

Each piece is a segment of a phrase from film, literature or life embroidered on to upholstery fabric samples that I've collected from design projects over the years. Embroidering them is like a little meditation on the words, a way to capture lines that resonate with me and pop up out of nowhere but often would otherwise slip my mind and get away. Making them is an opportunity to explore the graphic qualities of text and color in combination with the pattern and texture of the fabric.

Actually, I've become a bit hooked on the making of them and continue thinking of other ways to transcribe all of these collected phrases for future projects!

First Thursday & Five Years

This month's First Thursday gallery night in Jamaica Plain also happened to be the five year anniversary of the wonderful Hallway Gallery. And the celebration show, inspired by building materials, is an inspired choice and beautiful to boot. Go see Emma Rhodes' solo show there this month.

Designing a Revolution

The Design Museum is at it again, bringing design to some sorta off-the-radar spot in Boston. This time it's a selection of posters from the Green Patriots collection on exhibit at a small gallery space in the lobby at 315 A, a new residential development in the Fort Point Channel neighborhood. There is a great range of graphic design on display, complete with poster precedents from other eras, giving the Green Patriot Posters greater context.

The show is up through the end of May and worth a visit, especially if you happen to be in the neighborhood for some good food & drink!

on exhibit now through 5/13
free & open to the public

Kiefer & the Halls

A selection of pieces from the Hall Foundation's collection of Anselm Kiefer's work now have their own gallery at MASS MoCA and you should go see it.
Trust me... just go.*

*But don't go in the winter because the building is not weather conditioned. It's open seasonally from April to December. In the meantime, you can watch this lovely documentary on Kiefer (now streaming on Netflix).

memory, space, new england winters & a bit of fun

There's nothing one needs more than a bit of fun in the depths of a long New England winter hibernation. Craving a creative outlet & the hands-on making of something, I signed up to participate in Fun-A-Day Boston. The program: do something fun and creative every day for the month of January. It can be an activity or an art project, but the fun should be documented in some way!

I learned about the project at last year's gallery opening and was inspired by the variety of activities participants had devised for themselves: an eavesdropped conversation transcribed every day, research and stories and paintings of foxes, and food experiments. My project for this year: small, abstract paper models of a space that I had been in that day, not too precise or precious, just quickly done and based on memory.

Now spring is (finally) here and it's time for the pop-up show. Time to check out all of the fun that was had way back in January! If you're in the Boston area, don't miss the reception this Saturday from 6 - 9 pm at Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain.
