beauty is embarrassing

I had no idea how much Wayne White had influenced and informed my early sense of art & design & the world. With Pee Wee's playhouse puppets and music video art directing and general scrappiness in the reappropriation of things, he certainly has explored a way of looking at the everyday that shaped my malleable brain. And I just realized all of this by watching 'Beauty is Embarrassing', a recent Independent Lens feature on his work. It's engaging and charming and inspiring.

And if you're curious and want more, here is a little follow-along with Wayne while he goes thrifting for the printed reproductions that he uses in his paintings...

Which lead me to the SoLost series by Oxford American, which is worth taking a look at, if only for this snippet of photographer William Eggleston playing the piano...

It's so beautiful it hurts my feelings.
